US higher education heavyweights Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University, each claimed the number one spot in 12 subjects on the very top of the tables.
On the other hand, Universiti Malaya (UM) is the best performing Malaysian university in the most recent edition. UM was featured in 26 subject categories and it ranked 30th and 37th in the Development Studies and Electronic & Electrical Engineering categories respectively.
Moreover, Malaysian Universities have displayed improvement in all their rankings , with 25 new placements across the 42 subject tables. Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) occupied three placements under these subjects: Architecture & Built Environment, Education and Social Policy & Administration. This is their first time in the Top 100 of their respective tables.
The QS World University Rankings by Subject were based on the overall score garnered by universities per each subject based on reputation (academic and employer) and research impact (citations per paper). The reputation is assessed using QS’s major global surveys of academics and employers, whereas research impact is identified using citations data from Elsevier’s Scopus® bibliometric database. These rankings allow students to seek for leading tertiary education institutions in their selected field of study.
