Under the scholarship scheme, ten exceptional Malaysian students will receive a scholarship of up to HK$120,000 for their annual tuition fee waiver starting with the academic year of 2017/2018, and an additional HK$50,000 for annual living costs. In total, a sum of HK$6.8 million has been allocated for this venture between the governments. This partnership comes after a successful turnout between Hong Kong and Indonesia’s attempt at promoting education, where 10 Indonesian students have received and are currently pursuing their studies in Hong Kong under the scholarship.
Hong Kong’s Secretary of Education, Eddie Ng Hak-Kim highlighted the reasons behind this agreement, stating that “It can further internationalise and diversify the Hong Kong higher education sector and enrich our pool of human capital with talents with global vision and international networks. At the same time, the scholarship awardees can act as ambassadors to strengthen exchange and people-to-people bonds between Hong Kong and Malaysia.”
The scholarship is sponsored by donations from the Chinese Manufacturers’’ Association (CMA) Li Sau Hung Eddy Special Fund, with publicly-funded universities such as Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, Lingnan University and City University of Hong Kong among several others participating in the venture. Malaysian students hoping to take advantage of the scholarship may submit their applications for the upcoming academic year, upon which 10 students will be selected and nominated by the Hong Kong Education Bureau and the Malaysian Higher Education Ministry.
