The Higher Education Ministry’s initiatives have been paying off, as seen in the newly released QS Rankings for the top universities in the world.
For the third consecutive year in a row, the majority of Malaysia’s top institutions have shown monumental improvement, with Universiti Malaya (UM) inching closer to the top 100 in the world mark, while both Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) have successfully entered into the top 300. Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), however, fell out of the top 300 and further down in the rankings from its previous position in 2015 at 289. At the same time, USM has had much to celebrate recently after three of its lecturers ranked among the World’s Most Cited Researchers.
The rankings are based on an accumulation of four aspects: teaching, research, employability and internationalisation, all of which, as per the 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP), look to have been moving upwards. The 11MP’s objective is the rankings of two Malaysian universities being among the top 100 in the world.
Seen below are the top universities in Malaysia, as they currently stand.
