Positive Overall Results for SPM 2016

SPM 2016 candidates have bested last year's as seen in the examination results released today, said Ministry of Education Director-General Tan Sri Dr Khair Mohamad Yusof.
He shared that the National Average Grade (GPN) have improved with a score of 5.10, as compared to 5.15 last year. A lower GPN score means better performance.
"Last year result shows that there have been improvements in 41 subjects, 28 subjects recorded some drop in performance while four other subjects recorded no changes in performance," he said.

Among the core subjects that recorded improvement are Bahasa Melayu, English, Islamic Education, and Science with Islamic education. Mathematics, on the other hand, recorded the highest drop.
There was also a decrease in the number of straight As.
"Only 102, or 1.94 per cent of students, achieved straight A+, compared to 163 students (2.6%) in 2015," he said.
"(The number of students) who scored A and A- also decreased, with only 2.13% in 2016, compared to 2.3% in 2015," he added.

Despite the decline, Khair Mohamad said that the students' individual performance for SPM 2016 was much better than in 2015.
He also noted the improvement in the scores of the candidates from urban and rural areas, showing an increase of 0.05 and 0.08 respectively.
A total of 340,698 (85.21%) students eligible for SPM certificates this year, 510 of which are (out of 873) special needs students.
