Compared to 2015, even though the number of Malaysian Universities in the Top 350 list has decreased by one, the general ranking of Malaysia’s universities have improved in 2016.
Universiti Malaya (UM) climbed two ranks to reach 27th, while Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM)’s ranked 49th and 51st respectively. Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) have also improved and with UKM ranking 55th and UTM at 63rd.
Thanks to the government’s effort to execute the Higher Education Blueprint 2015-2025, the overall ranking of Malaysian universities have improved from last year. The initiatives included using other universities with similar socio-economic and socio-cultural circumstances as a benchmark and increasing publicity of the niche areas of local universities.
The result showed that Malaysia is moving forward in achieving the goal to place one university in Asia’s Top 25, two universities in the Global Top 100, and four universities in the Global Top 200 by 2025.
