UK Minister Seema Malhotra Visits Sunway University to Boost Global Education Partnerships

The United Kingdom’s Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State (Indo-Pacific) and Minister for Equalities, Seema Malhotra MP, visited Malaysia where she delivered a special talk at Sunway University.

Organised in partnership with the British Council and the British High Commission in Malaysia, the event titled ‘Future Forward: UK–Malaysia Connections That Shape Tomorrow’ brought together students, academics, and thought leaders for an engaging discussion on the future of UK–Malaysia ties, with a strong focus on education, research collaboration, and innovation as drivers of global progress. Tan Sri Sir Jeffrey Cheah, Founder and Chairman of the Sunway Group as well as the Chancellor of Sunway University, was also in attendance to welcome the Minister.

She shared powerful insights on how education, innovation, and global partnerships are shaping the future of Malaysia and the UK. Her address highlighted UK–Malaysia education collaborations and emphasised the vital role of students as the driving force of international cooperation and harmonisation, fostering positive change and building sustainable futures for all.

Professor Sibrandes Poppema, President and Vice Chancellor of Sunway University said, “We are deeply honoured to have hosted Minister Seema Malhotra during her inaugural visit to Malaysia. Her presence reflects the longstanding ties between Malaysia and the United Kingdom, particularly in the realm of education. At Sunway, we have long championed international collaborations that inspire innovation through groundbreaking research and empower our students to become global citizens. The Minister’s insights further strengthen our shared commitment to building bridges for a brighter future together.”

The Minister’s visit reaffirmed the strong and growing foundation of UK–Malaysia educational partnerships. A standout example is the 19-year collaboration between Sunway University and Lancaster University, which enables students to earn two degree awards across a comprehensive range of disciplines as well as supports joint transdisciplinary research initiatives across borders through the Future Cities Research Institute. Over the years, this partnership has gone from strength to strength, becoming one of the largest and most successful transnational education partnership in the region.

Sunway International Schools also recently unveiled a landmark collaboration with Magdalen College School (MCS) Oxford, a premier British institution with a heritage of over five centuries and ranked within the top 1% of more than 2,400 independent schools in the UK. This strategic partnership brings the Cambridge International Programmes to students in Malaysia, delivered to the highest British educational standards. It offers students unparalleled access to global pathways, including Oxbridge, the Ivy League, and other world-class universities worldwide.
