So you decide to attend university and hope to graduate with a qualification that gives you the best chance of landing a job. The working world, meanwhile, becomes increasingly more complex, more demanding, more competitive. What do you need to do in university, so your education moves parallel with all that?

Develop your critical thinking and creativity

Creativity is to problem-solving what critical thinking is to logical decisions. A popular belief, or rather, the wrong popular belief, is that creativity and critical thinking are inborn traits. In fact, creativity can be developed with as much success as critical thinking can be nurtured.

At the basic level, developing creativity and critical thinking involves adjusting of perspectives and strategising. Competitions are a great way to develop critical thinking and creativity, as are entrepreneurial settings. In the 21st-century economy, an entrepreneurial mindset is an especially valued commodity. Compete at every opportunity and cultivate your mindset in the leader-innovator ways of the entrepreneur.

Develop your communication and collaboration skills

The abilities to communicate thoughts and work together towards a common goal are so required at the workplace that their importance cannot be overly stated.

Lead your community and care for the environment

“Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all” – Aristotle.

Volunteer your time and energy. Share your knowledge, talent, and resources. Give back to the community. Care for environmental sustainability. Helping and caring for others will shape your personality.

Learn to work through differences

Diversity and inclusion are becoming the bywords in modern organisations, which oftentimes are multinational. Employees able to embrace diversity and inclusion are an asset to the organisation. Their ability to work with people from different backgrounds, experiences, and working styles begets the opportunity of learning different views. Diverse views make better decisions, leading to a company’s high performance.

Learn well and wide

Research shows employers prefer candidates who display well-rounded knowledge and applied skills. Learning your subject well and wide expands not only your knowledge but also your skillset. To learn your subject well, go down its depth; to learn it wide, study a subject across its breadth. Hands-on experience will guide you into deep understanding. A holistic curriculum will give you room to expand. Attend your classes diligently. Talk to your professors frequently. They should be guiding you, challenging you, and mentoring you; putting you through your paces to help bring out a better you.
