Do you wake up feeling like a zombie? Do you have trouble keeping your eyes open at school or tuition centres, or even while having lunch? You might be one of the teens who spend too much time in front of a screen.
According to a recent study reported on NBC News, American teens who used two to three devices each day were more likely to sleep for less than five hours when compared to those used just one gadget.
How is that possible? Apparently, blue light keeps you awake because it suppresses the production of melatonin (a hormone that regulates your sleep-wake cycle). Simply said, the light on your phone is messing you chemical balance in your body. Sadly, that means TVs, computers, and smartphones, as well as providing you with things to do that keep you awake, could actually be stopping you getting to sleep when you want to.
But zombies, take heart! There’s a cure. Keep your screens out of your bedroom entirely, but we know that it’s easier said than done. If you must check your Facebook just one last time, dim your phone screen as much as you can and use a program such as f.lux to get rid of that blue glow from your computer screen. You could even go as far as wearing amber-tinted glasses – they’ve been shown to improve sleep quality and mood.
If you’re like most teen struggling to get enough zzzz’s, you may not realize that you’re probably also facing higher risks of obesity and depression — and even car accidents. So, look up! Break your screen addiction. Don’t bring teenage zombies back from the dead. Your body and mind will thank you for it.
