Malaysia's Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are the world’s first nationally coordinated online learning initiative offering various free courses for all students and members of the public. It enables students from anywhere in the world to earn a degree and certificate easily. First launched in September 2015, MOOC began with only 60 courses and has rapidly grown to a total of 450 courses today.
According to Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh, Minister of Higher Education in Malaysia, there are currently a total of 600,000 students from 170 countries who are enrolled in this program. Approximately 25% of the total students are international, with 50,000 students from Australia and the United States.
The increase in student participation and recognition shows that MOOCs are a huge success in the betterment of quality and accessibility for our higher education, both locally and internationally. This also aligns with the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2015-2025 (Higher Education), particularly in Shift 9 - Globalised Online Learning, which aims to shape education through online resources and tools.
Currently, these courses are open for enrollments at all public and private education institutions in the country. Students have a wide selection of interests to choose from and pursue in. Popular topics includes Business, Engineering, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Healthcare, Languages, and Technology.
For interested students, visit OpenLearning.com to pick your choice of course. OpenLearning.com is the official MOOC platform for all public institutions of higher education in Malaysia. Depending on the subjects, it will be delivered primarily in Bahasa Malaysia, English and Arabic.
