Student’s Perspective: Celebrating Raya in Malaysia!

One of the perks of being a student in Malaysia are the festivals! Some of you might be wondering, especially our dear international students, why are places thronged with green squarish looking deco (ketupat leaves), fairy lights and lamps (pelita)?

1. What is Raya Aidilfitri?

Well, Malaysia is currently in the spirit of the Hari Raya Eid al-Fitr season and people from all walks of life are celebrating this festive. The act of exchange of greetings which was once a cultural tradition has now become the Malaysian community's tradition.

Hari Raya is an annual celebration which marks the end of the Ramadan month, the month of fasting for Muslims, and the beginning of a new month, Syawal month, on the Islamic calendar.

Hari Raya also celebrates the victory of Muslim individuals who not only abstain themselves from consuming food and water from dawn till sunset, but also doing bad deeds.


2. How can you celebrate it even though you are not a Muslim student?

How can you celebrate it? Here is how :

  1. Say yes to open house invitations! It is free =)

  2. Try the traditional wear to really immerse yourself into the culture, but if you’re unable to, wear a modest attire (nothing too revealing).

  3. Let your taste buds be free and try the traditional delicacies, maybe even learn the recipe so that you can prepare it.

  4. Finally, practice saying “Selamat Hari Raya” and greet everyone with it!

3. How can Raya be meaningful for you?

Besides heavy traffic on the highways, colorful traditional costumes, and visiting family and friends, what is the true meaning of this special month?  

It is all about feeling blessed! Sometimes, it is the smaller and finer things in life. Every single thing that sparks the joy in us.

These days, being a student is more than merely passing a paper. We are expected to gain experience, take up leadership, and so much more - the pressure is real, and, it can be super stressful.  Especially with social media, we only see the best things in others’ lives and sometimes overlook what is good in our lives. So, how could we detox?


Reflecting upon the spirit of Eid, here are some easy steps:

  1. List down things that you are grateful for

  2. Celebrate the success you've achieved

  3. Write down the things you are grateful for

Let's remember to take care of ourselves and start this healthy trend.
