The United Kingdom (UK), remains to be the second most popular country where most international students go to for college and university. As of 2014-2015, there were about 436,585 students from various nations worldwide who came to study in the UK, according to the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA).
Malaysians comprise 3.9% of the international student population in the country, as of 2014. With about 17,060 students from Malaysia, we are the fifth largest source country sending the most students to the UK. Despite the distance, Malaysians, as well as students of other nationalities choose to study and eventually work in the UK. Ever wonder why they choose this country?
The best qualifications
If you look into this year's rankings, universities from the UK are among the top 10 in the world. The QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017’s top 10 lists four UK institutions. Meanwhile, three universities were part of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2016-2017's best 10–including the top spot.
The quality of education offered is evident in all their institutions, as the quality is assured by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA)–an independent body that monitors, and advises on the standards and quality of the UK higher education. Also, the availability of excellent facilities in the country makes it home to world-class research and researchers. It is no wonder that the country has produced global leaders in the world of research and development (R&D).
The world's best and brightest are also in various fields of the UK's higher education–arts and humanities, politics, science, among others. As such, students will have the opportunity to be taught by some of the best educators and leaders in various industries.
Opportunities abound
Besides that, graduates from the UK's education institutions are among the top choices of best employers worldwide. According to The Graduate Market 2016, there was an increase in the number of graduates hired by organisations listed in The Times Top 100 Graduate Employers. Employment rates rose to 3.3%, as compared to that of 2014, and these employees come from universities all over the UK. Also, employers in nine out of thirteen key industries and employment areas are also expecting to take on more new graduates this year than in 2015.
Get there, fast!
But the truth is, having good grades is just the first stepping stone towards your dream UK university. In fact, the competition to get into the institutions is fierce and to get into the top schools, one has to pass rigorous examinations, vigorous vetting, as well as tough interviews.
The good news is, the British Council is here to assist students with this process. Get prepared as they bring you The Cheat Sheet to Top Universities, a seminar on submitting exemplary Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) applications, as well as on handling interviews, even at Oxbridge.
Jonathan Whitehouse, Abbey College Cambridge’s international admissions director for the Asia region, will be speaking at the seminar to answer questions and to share tips and tricks to help you with your application.
