6 Cool Spots to Hang Out in University Malaya

1. FOOD VILLAGE
This concept is a little newer as compared to Sahur (mentioned above). Food Village has various food stalls with not only Malaysian food, but it also carries a pretty decent international cuisine; eg: Iranian, Pakistani & Western food. At first, it was popular among the local students only – partly due to its location being close to the local residential colleges. But, in no time, the place is now crawling with international students as well. On certain nights, you can enjoy live band (from campus) performances from the university’s local acts and on nights where tere’s a football match playing, you can only imagine how the environment will be like. It’s actually quite fun! Doesn’t really feel like you are in a campus.
2. DAILY FRESH
What’s famous here? The waffles! This is one a 2 in 1 as it’s not only a popular eating place, but also a cool hangout spot among students in UM. Everyone goes here to grab the delicious waffles no matter what time of the day it is (9am to 8pm on weekdays). It’s quite funny to think about it actually because when someone sees Daily Fresh outside the campus, no one really cares much or hangs out there, but in campus, it is a must go- to place.
3. OUTSIDE THE LIBRARY
You might think this is strange, but, trust me this is actually a really cool place to hang out with your friends. They have really nice wooden benches decked under some beautiful and shady trees. Read a book or just take your time to cool off from the heat, I can bet you will enjoy hanging out here- provided that the weather is on your side. [Read: Studying in University Malaya? 4. TASIK VARSITI (LAKE)
This is one of my favorites - imagine taking some time out from your busy day to unwind and enjoy the serene environment of Tasik Varsiti from a kayak! Students can kayak here for as low as RM2 per person when you flash your student card. If kayaking is not so much your thing, fret not. You can have a great picnic with some friends, read a book, go for a jog around the lake, or simply take a relaxing stroll. I personally love taking a casual stroll with friends to catch up on what’s been going on.
5. OPEN GYM
The open gym UM is always a popular spot not only to keep fit and healthy, but a great place to make new friends. It’s located right on campus so location’s not a problem. You can simply job over to the gym, get your workout done, jog back and still have time to finish up those darn assignments or study last minute for that test tomorrow. It’s pretty well equipped too and has adequate equipment to suit most people. The best part? NO TIME RESTRICTIONS! How awesome is that? Use it whenever you want, knowing that you can get a great exercise sesh at safe place at anytime of the day. [Read: 6 Daily Life Hacks for UM Students]
6. KPS
Kompleks Perdana Siswa (KPS) another famous place that students come to eat and hangout in between classes. While this place is only technically open from morning till 3pm, there are small stalls outside the building that open right till the evening offering a great variety of eats - from Malaysian, Arabic as well as Turkish delights. This place is especially popular amongst students from the Middle East, so it’s no surprise if you hear students speaking in various foreign languages as they dig in to the delicious Arabic and Turkish grub.
