About Michigan State University

Michigan State University (MSU) is a public research university located in East Lansing, Michigan, United States and is the first land-grant institution. It is considered to be one of America's Public Ivy universities, which recognizes top public research universities in the United States. MSU is the eighth-largest university in the United States, with approximately 48,000 students and 3,000 faculty members.

MSU pioneered the studies of packaging, hospitality business, supply chain management, and telecommunication. The study-abroad program is the largest of any single-campus university in the country, offering more than 200 programs in more than 60 countries on all continents including Antarctica.

The university is expert in nuclear physics, economics, engineering, business, education, osteopathic medicine, political science, journalism, packaging, fisheries and wildlife, forestry, and criminal justice programs.

U.S. News & World Report ranks MSU 72nd in the U.S. According to the 2011 QS World University Rankings placed Michigan State University at 164th internationally. The National Communication Association (NCA) ranks MSU's PhD programs as No. 1 in educating researchers in the rapidly growing fields of health communication and communication technology.

Campus information

MSU IT Services manages about 40 computer labs across campus for use by anyone with an MSU NetID. Computer labs include Windows and Macintosh systems, laser printers, a wide variety of current software, and high-speed connections to the Internet. Wireless service is available in many buildings across campus.

MSU also provides Recreational Sports and Fitness Services to the students through three indoor intramural facilities, one multi-purpose arena, 27 acres of outdoor recreational field space, an off-site sailing center and shared campus facilities including tennis courts, golf courses, and an ice arena among others.

Accommodation also provided which including flexible housing, non-traditional/ apartment housing, quiet housing, suite-style, and transitional housing.

  • Michigan State University is the proud home of one of the largest on-campus housing systems in the nation. With a variety of housing options, amenities and newly renovated facilities, MSU has a place for everyone.
  • All freshmen are required to live on campus. On-campus residence halls and apartments are also popular with returning students. Living on campus is recommended for at least two years because research shows that students who do get better grades, are more involved in campus activities, have more interaction with faculty, feel more connected to the campus community and are more likely to graduate on time.
