Curriculum

STAGE THREE

  • Dissertation (PF) - The dissertation is designed to enable students to gain experience in research by undertaking a substantive project which explores specific issues in greater depth than is possible elsewhere in the programme. It is a major opportunity for students to demonstrate that they have met the level H descriptors for Bachelor Degrees with Honours as detailed by QAA within their Framework for Higher Education Qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Students will also be expected to demonstrate the knowledge and skills expected of an Honours undergraduate as defined in the relevant QAA Benchmark Statement. The dissertation is also designed to develop independent learning, self-reliance, work planning skills and a professional approach to study.
  • Commercial Floral Practices - This module is intended to equip students with the skills and knowledge to develop an appreciation of marketing and event management within the floristry industry. It will give an overview of the issues, activities and planning involved with organising and promoting a relevant floristry event; an understanding of corporate image, marketing health and safety and other relevant legislation within floristry businesses. Furthermore, the module will allow students the opportunity to review and reflect upon their development needs regarding their career path within the industry in relation to experience, qualifications and future aspirations.
  • Contemporary Floral Design - This module is intended to develop students’ knowledge and self- creative expression within contemporary floral design. Students will gain an understanding of floral designs in a variety of contrasting countries, researching design techniques and investigating the specific styles and current design concepts of influential international floral artist and designers. A range of skills is also learned in order to aid and support the students’ intellectual research techniques, design theories and presentation skills required for the production of a comprehensive document and practical exhibition. The module addresses practical styles of International floral artists, investigating the impact of social, cultural and economic implications for the range of contemporary wedding, sympathy, gift and studio exhibits. Students are given the opportunity to select a design brief/theme/International designer appropriate to the style/concepts of contemporary floral designs. Creative expression and development of the students design sense will enable them to incorporate elements from International designs into their own work and critically appraise the contemporary design.
  • Floriculture and Ornamental Plant Production - This module offers an applied understanding of the procedures involved in the development, production, postharvest handling and market presentation of cut flowers, foliage and ornamental pot plants. The scope of the international trade in florals will be examined; procedures involved in the selection and breeding of ornamentals evaluated, the role of plant physiological processes in relation to commercial plant production, and the interaction between these and crop quality discussed.
