BSc(Hons) Armed Forces

Our typical offer would be 200 UCAS points normally achieved over a minimum of either two or more A levels, an AVCE double award, BTEC National Diploma or other equivalent qualification. This includes any stand alone AS levels,Key Skills at Level 3 and Access to HE Diploma full award (Pass of 60 credits - of which a minimum of 45 credits must be at level 3 including 18 at Merit or Distinction).

A satisfactory reference will be required as part of our selection process.

GCSE Maths, English and a Science or Language at Grade C. As part of your work placement application, you will be required to undertake an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check and vetting by HM Armed Forces. In addition you will have to undertake and successfully complete a medical examination and other assessments. There are a number of conditions which may make you ineligible to join HM Armed Forces.

Language entry requirements

The University accepts the following minimum English language standards for entry to its degree courses.

You must have at least one of the following standards in English to enter a degree or diploma course:

An IELTS score of 6.0, or a TOEFL score of 550 (or 213 for the computer-based test)

Pearson PTE Academic score of 54

A pass in the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) examination

A pass in the Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) examination

GCSE/GCE O Level grade C or equivalent British-based examination

For selected countries, a good pass in English in the final year of secondary school (this being the equivalent of year 13 in England and Wales), or

Any other equivalent qualification recognised by the British Council (as listed in the British Council NARIC Guide) or an equivalent body

For entry to the BA (Hons) English Language and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) programmes, you will need a score of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent, since this is a special award which includes an international qualification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

For entry on to PhD programmes you will need a score of:

IELTS 7.0 or

TOEFL 650 or

IBT 115

While each of the degrees has a distinct curriculum, below are some examples of the modules you will study:

Year 1 provides a sound foundation in the principal academic subjects upon which the remainder of the course is built, principally military history, civil engineering and medicine. Your first year programme will include modules that provide a context for your degree as well as core 'study skills' which will help you acquire the necessary scholastic abilities to fully engage in an honours degree programme.

Year 2 focuses more closely upon the knowledge and skills relevant to a professional member of HM Armed Forces. Not only will you learn about subjects such as structural mechanics, critical care and counter insurgency but you will also study leadership skills, etc.

Year 3 in your final year you will again engage in more subject specific modules that have been designed to acquaint you more fully with some of the skills needed by specialist branches of HM Armed Forces. You will study subjects such as environmental engineering, emergency care in action and military law, etc. You may also complete a research project based around your reserve or TA service provided that you satisfy the entry requirements.
