Stephen F. Austin State University is a comprehensive institution dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, scholarship, creative work and service. Stephen F. Austin State University is a regional institution located in Nacogdoches, Texas. The university enrolls approximately 13,000 students, offering 80 undergraduate majors and more than 120 areas of study within six academic colleges – business, education, fine arts, forestry and agriculture, liberal and applied arts, and sciences and mathematics. The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Campus information

The main campus includes 406 acres, part of the original homestead of Thomas J. Rusk, early Texas patriot and United States senator. In addition, the university maintains a 642-acre agricultural research center for beef, poultry and swine production and an equine center; an 18.7-acre experimental forest in southwestern Nacogdoches County, a 25.3-acre forestry field station on Lake Sam Rayburn, and a Science Center on a 15.8-acre tract of land on Hwy. 259 approximately five miles from the main SFA campus.

In an impressive setting of pine trees and natural beauty, the university has some 28 instructional buildings and numerous student housing options representing an investment of approximately $500 million.

Every history of Texas must include Nacogdoches. For more than two centuries, it was a pawn in French-Spanish imperial rivalries. As the capital of East Texas, Nacogdoches led in the Texas independence movements and was the seat of three republics before the successful Lone Star Republic. The city, therefore, flies nine flags rather than the traditional six flags.
