About New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT)

New Jersey Institute of Technology, also known as NJIT, is a public research university which located in the University Heights neighborhood of Newark, New Jersey, United States. NJIT was founded in year 1881 and opened as Newark Technical School later in year 1884. NJIT is the science and technology university of the state of New Jersey.

NJIT is one of the nation's leading public technological universities, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) prepares students to be leaders in the technology-dependent economy of the 21st century. According to U.S. News and World Report, NJIT has been ranked as one of the Top National University. NJIT also ranked as Top 10 among technological universities in faculty scholarly productivity by Academic Analytics.

NJIT is known for the research capabilities in various fields, especially nanotechnology, solar physics, polymer science, and the development of a smart gun technology. The university also hosts the Center for Solar- Terrestrial Research which owns and operates the Big Bear Solar Observatory, the world's largest solar observatory that located in Big Bear Lake, California, and operates the Owens Valley Solar Array, near Bishop, California.

NJIT offers 126 degree programs including 48 undergraduate (Bachelor of Science/Arts) majors, and 78 graduate (Masters and PhD) programs.The university is organized into 27 academic departments. Three departments, Biological Sciences, History, and Theater Arts.

NJIT has been recognized nationally for providing graduates with a high rate of return on their investment. The Bloomberg Businessweek survey of U.S. colleges ranked NJIT in the top 10 percent nationally for return on investment and classified the university as one of four best buys in New Jersey higher education. has ranked NJIT as the number one value among colleges and universities nationally. NJIT has earned national prominence by developing relevant academic programs taught by leading practitioners in their fields. Six specialized schools offer 46 bachelor’s, 56 master’s, and 19 doctoral degree programs. With 489 full-time and adjunct faculty, 89 percent of whom hold doctoral degrees, the university maintains a student-faculty ratio of 16:1. NJIT serves an ethnically diverse student body, ranking number one in New Jersey in awarding engineering degrees to African-American and Hispanic students.

Campus information

NJIT's campus is the hub of cultural, educational, and social activities for the NJIT community. The staff of Campus Center provides students, faculty, and staff with a relaxing environment where the students can enjoy a meal, attend a meeting, study, watch a film, play a variety of games, participate in the many cultural, social, and educational activities offered, or just socialize with friends.

The Campus Center also provides several services at Information Desk for students to make reservation of campus space, fax, lockers services, and so on.

NJIT provides residence halls since 1978 when Redwood Hall opened its doors. The residence halls are Redwood Hall, Cypress, Oak or Laurel halls. Each building has a unique setup, each of the resident rooms are furnished with beds, dressers, lights, desks, closet space and chairs. There is also cable programming for each room and high-speed Internet access for each resident.

New Jersey Institute of Technology is located in the vibrant University Heights district of downtown Newark, just 20 minutes from Manhattan by train.


Residence halls – Dorman Residential Honors Residence, Cypress, Laurel, or Oak Halls.

Each hall has a unique setup. Each room is air-conditioned, fully-furnished and has high-speed internet and cable TV including HBO. Additionally, each hall has lounges, study lounges, recreational space, laundry room, and vending machines.

These residence halls offer the obvious advantages of on-campus living - proximity to classrooms, dining halls, the gym, the library, your friends. Living on campus offers a host of other opportunities for students: easy access to NYC (20 min), NJPAC, The Newark Museum, Rutgers University-Newark, UMDNJ and the chance for you to be independent, learning to live on your own and make key decisions. .

  1. Redwood Hall - Approximately 200 first-year and upper-class students in single and double rooms. Two community bathrooms are located on each floor. 
  2. Cypress Hall - Approximately 450 first-year and upper-class students in suite style rooms with single and double rooms. Suites are comprised of two bedrooms and a shared bathroom and foyer. 
  3. Oak Hall - houses approximately 170 upper-class students in both suite-style rooms and apartments.  Suite-style rooms are double occupancy with a kitchenette and shared bathroom.  Each apartment has a kitchen, living room, and bathroom.  Apartment choices include a single bedroom with a double bedroom or two double bedrooms.
  4. Laurel Hall - houses approximately 570 upper-class students in single and double rooms. Each suite has a shared bathroom and foyer. 

NJIT students use electronic cards for access to residence halls. Desk attendants are on duty 24 hours a day and provide security for the residence halls by monitoring hall entrances and swiping resident IDs. All guests must have a valid photo ID and must be signed into the residence hall by a resident host. Guests must be accompanied by their hosts at all times. Residence Life has staff on-duty in each hall during non-business hours. In addition, NJIT’s Public Safety Officers patrol the campus 24 hours a day. Patrols are conducted on foot, in cars, and on bicycles. Rooftop surveillance cameras are mounted throughout campus and monitored around the clock.
