About Butler University

When you come to Butler, you’re getting more than just a collaborative and engaging learning experience. You’re joining the community of Indianapolis. We’re just five miles north of downtown, which gives you unfettered access to the bustling heart of the 14th largest city in the country. There’s no shortage of fun here. Art festivals, Colts games, outdoor concerts, the Indianapolis 500, and plenty of space for exploring—these could all be part of your college experience at Butler.

Our mission is to provide the highest quality of liberal and professional education and to integrate the liberal arts with professional education, by creating and fostering a stimulating intellectual community built upon interactive dialogue and inquiry among students, faculty, and staff.

Campus information

Located on 295 acres on the north side of Indianapolis, the nation’s 14th-largest city, Butler is home to both historic buildings and park-like settings. Whether you’re here for a performing art or athletic event, a visiting student or returning alum, we hope you enjoy your time exploring our beautiful campus.

Located just 5 minutes from campus, Broad Ripple Village is a unique neighborhood featuring a vibrant nightlife, eclectic restaurant scene, art galleries, cafés, and parks. You can enjoy a stroll or a bike ride along the Broad Ripple canal, head down for local festivals, or take advantage of the many student discounts offered in the area.

Accommodation

Moving into your first place away from home is a liberating, exciting time. And at Butler, you’ll share the experience with new roommates and neighbors, all part of a campus community that make residence halls feel more like homes. Some of your best relationships will begin right here. Nearly all incoming freshman, and most sophomores and juniors, live on campus. You’re never far from anything you need—your classes, the library, the HRC, and late-night snacks are always within walking distance.

The Residence Life Office is responsible for promoting and maintaining an environment on campus where students are free to develop academically and socially. Developing a sense of personal and communal responsibility and respecting the rights of others also is an important part of this program. Residence Life staff members oversee the management of Butler’s three residence halls and two apartment-style options.
