About Agnes Scott College

Agnes Scott College is an independent undergraduate college in the United States. Agnes Scott's campus lies in downtown Decatur, Georgia, nestled inside the perimeter of the bustling metro-Atlanta area.

The college was founded in 1889 as Decatur Female Seminary by a group of Presbyterians under the leadership of their minister, Frank H. Gaines. In 1890, the name was changed to Agnes Scott Institute to honor the mother of the college's primary benefactor, Col. George Washington Scott. The name was changed again to Agnes Scott College in 1906, and remains today a liberal arts college for women.

Agnes Scott currently enrolls 900 students. The student to faculty ratio is 11:1 and 100% of the tenure-track faculty hold terminal degrees.

The college offers 34 undergraduate majors and 31 minors and is affiliated with numerous institutions, including Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University School of Nursing. Students who graduate from Agnes Scott receive a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree.

Campus information

Agnes Scott’s campus is located in the town of Decatur, an historic city of “homes, schools and places of worship,” and is only minutes away by car from Atlanta. Decatur offers eclectic shops and restaurants within easy walking distance.

Atlanta is well known for being home to a large number of colleges. While Agnes Scott students enjoy individual attention on our campus, they also have access to cross registration and social events with our affiliate Atlanta and Georgia colleges such as Emory University, Georgia Tech and Georgia State, just to name a few.

Another benefit to living near Atlanta is the multitude of experiential, hands-on opportunities. Our students can participate in exciting internships while living on campus and get a head start on their job search before graduation.

When you move into your residence hall, you will experience Agnes Scott’s time-honored tradition of living on campus. As a first-year, you’ll have the opportunity to live near classmates with similar academic interests—making it easy for you to make many new friends and continue learning outside the classroom.

While you’re living on campus, take advantage of residence life programs such as Decatur and Atlanta excursions, on-campus parties and diversity awareness. At the end of the day as you put your feet up and hit the books, we want you to think of your residence hall as your safe, welcoming and fun home at Agnes Scott.
