About University College London (UCL)

University College London (UCL) is a public research university that was established in 1826  to open up education in England for the first time to students of any race, class or religion. It has close to 30,000 students in the university. This University is based mainly in London. The University is a federal mega university made up of 31 affiliates. Through its Colleges and Institutes, the University of London offers over 3700 courses each year covering almost every subject found in any university curriculum. A few of the subjects that are covered include Divinity, Medicine, Law, Veterinary Medicine, Dental Surgery, Engineering, Science, Music, Arts, Business Administration, Education, Commerce and Humanities.

The university has a wide range of departments and sub-schools such as the School of Slavonic and East European Studies – which counts Jonathan Ross amongst its alumni – and Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology. The London Centre for Nanotechnology is a joint venture with Imperial College and has been a centre for studies into the cutting-edge disciplines in science and technology since 2003.

Accommodation

UCL HALLS OF RESIDENCE
There are three Halls of Residence at UCL, which provide breakfast and dinner from Monday to Friday excluding Bank Holidays and six UCL closure days. These Halls have small kitchens on each floor for student use. Students are responsible for cleaning their own rooms. Bed linen is not provided, but can be purchased. Students with specific dietary requirements, for whatever reason, are strongly advised to apply for self-catering accommodation only. Places are offered for 40 weeks, including Christmas, Easter and the start of the summer vacations. Catering is provided for 36 weeks. All UCL halls are non-smoking, including student bedrooms.

STUDENT HOUSES
These are residences in which students are responsible for providing and cooking their own food and cleaning their own rooms (and common areas if living in flats). Kitchens are provided in which students may prepare their own food, or meals may be bought from the various food outlets on the UCL Bloomsbury Campus. Some Student Houses are managed by UCL, some are operated by UNITE and Liberty Living, specialist student housing providers.

As part of the University of London, UCL has access to approximately 500 places for its students in the catered Intercollegiate Halls. These Halls, all within easy reach of UCL, are available to students attending UCL and any college of the University of London.

Campus

The university owns and runs the nearby Bloomsbury Theatre which hosts drama, music and stand-up comedy shows. A full range of library resources are available for UCL students. UCL offers accommodation and advice. UCL Student Accommodation's aim is to provide agreeable accommodation in a friendly environment at affordable prices. The Ifor Evans Hall is located 25-30 minutes' walk away, and on direct bus and tube routes to, UCL. Ramsay Hall is five minutes' walk from UCL. Fully carpeted and with washbasins in all rooms. Facilities provided are including a TV room, computer cluster facilities, launderette, and bicycle storage area. Each room has a computer data point.

The main UCL buildings are on Gower Street in Bloomsbury, between London Euston station and the British Museum, although there are a number of other buildings scattered throughout central London.
