About Singapore Management University

Singapore Management University (SMU) is a premier university in Asia, and is internationally recognized for its world-class research and distinguished teaching. SMU was founded in year 2000 and its mission is to generate leading-edge research with global impact and produce broad-based, creative and entrepreneurial leaders for the knowledge-based economy. SMU is known for its interactive and technologically enabled pedagogy of seminar-style teaching in small class sizes.

SMU was set up as Singapore's first publicly-funded autonomous university offering a style of education modelled after The Wharton School. SMU occupies a state-of-the-art city campus located in the heart of Singapore's civic, cultural and business districts. By pioneering business, economic, legal, social science and technology oriented programmes that meet these needs, SMU has redefined tertiary education in Singapore.

SMU is home to about 8,000 students and comprises six schools: School of Accountancy, Lee Kong Chian School of Business, School of Economics, School of Information Systems, School of Law and School of Social Sciences, offering a wide range of bachelor’s, master’s and PhD degree programmes in various disciplines. Emphasis is placed on generating rigorous, high-impact, multidisciplinary research that addresses Asian issues of global relevance.

SMU faculty members collaborate with leading international researchers and universities from USA, Europe, China and India as well as with partners in the business community and public sector through its research institutes and centres. SMU’s city campus is a state-of-the art facility located in the heart of downtown Singapore, fostering strategic linkages with the business and wider community.

International students in SMU come from India, China, ASEAN countries as well as further afield such as Europe, North America, Africa, the Middle East, Maldives, Japan and South Korea. They bring into SMU the richness of diversity and cultural vibrancy, creating a learning environment beyond geographical borders and introducing global perspectives. In March 2008, SMU was recognized at the Singapore Education Awards for attracting to Singapore greater numbers of overseas students who excel both academically and socially, and in March 2009, as best host for international students studying in Singapore.

Campus information

The SMU campus is located in the central part of the island at a 4.5 hectare city campus. It is located in the civic district of the city. The campus has six blocks. The six buildings are connected by an underground walkway known as the Concourse, which is open to the public and lined with shops.

Teaching facilities include seminar rooms, class rooms, computer labs and group study rooms used by students for project discussions. There are research facilities scattered throughout the University including a swimming pool, gymnasium, and a multipurpose sports hall which is equipped with a rock wall.

Singapore has a well-organized public transportation service. Getting around Singapore is easy and convenient. Many parts of Singapore are easily accessible via public buses and MRT. Fares can be paid by cash or EZ-Link card which can be used for both the MRT and public buses.

Accommodation

SMU Residences @ Prinsep, is a hostel for students which is located on Prinsep Street. The hostel was created by refurbishing three Housing Development Board blocks donated by the government. The hostel was officially opened in February 2007 and can accommodate about 250 residents. The hostel is located near Holland Village which is known for its cosmopolitan array of restaurants and cafes. Priority is given to international students, most of whom live in various private hostels around the island.

To further enhance students' experience of communal hostel life, there are common facilities, such as laundry and meeting rooms. Residents can also look forward to informal gatherings at the hostel's lounge and BBQ pits. Facilities include:
