Entry Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with Honours from Universiti Utara Malaysia or any other institution of higher learning recognised by the University Senate with a CGPA of at least 2.75; or
  • Bachelor’s degree with Honours in Pure Sciences or Science and Technology or any other Professional field from Universiti Utara Malaysia or any other institution of higher learning recognised by the University Senate with a CGPA of at least 2.50; 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Pure Sciences or Science and Technology or any other Professional field from Universiti Utara Malaysia or any other institution of higher learning recognised by the University Senate with a CGPA of less than 2.50 and working experience in a related field; or
  • Diploma from any institutions of higher learning recognised by the University Senate with at least ten (10) years of relevant work experience and aged 35 years or older; or
  • Other equivalent qualifications recognised by the University Senate; and
  • Fulfill the English language requirement as set by the University Senate.

Theory of Counseling, Psychotherapy, Personality and Career (30 credit hours)

  • Theory and Practice of Individual Counseling
  • Theory and Practice of Group Counseling
  • Theory and Practice of Family and Marriage Counseling
  • Applied Career Counseling Counseling
  • Contemporary Career Seminar
  • Counseling Ethics and Counselor Act 1998 (Act 580)
  • The Psychology of the Adolescence and The Adult
  • Psychological Testing and Assessment
  • Theories of Personality and Psychotherapy
  • Applied Social Psychology

Project Paper (6 credit hours)

Practicum and Internship (9 credit hours)

RESEARCH

  • Present and defend proposed research to a committee
  • Present progress reports of research work at colloquium arranged by the Graduate School or College
  • Attend a viva session to defend the thesis, and
  • Submit a final thesis.

Students without sufficient research skills and knowledge are required to attend and pass the following courses with at leas a B grade before being allowed to defend their proposal (i.e., within the first two semesters of their enrollment):

  • Research Methodology
  • Academic Writing, and/or
  • Any other course as determined by the supervisor or Academic Committee.
