Free University of Berlin

Freie Universität Berlin is a leading research institution. It is one of the German universities successful in all three funding lines in the federal and state Excellence Initiative, thereby receiving additional funding for its institutional future development strategy.

Freie Universität can thus take its place as an international network university in the global competition among universities. Development and assessment of research projects takes place within various focus areas, research networks, and platforms for interdisciplinary collaborative research.

The university’s performance in the Excellence Initiative provided funding for several new graduate schools and transdisciplinary research clusters. In particular, the graduate schools play a key role in the development of internationally competitive research centers of excellence.

Freie Universität Berlin is a full university with 15 departments and central institutes offering over 150 degree programs across a wide range of subjects.

Dahlem Campus

​Habelschwerdter Allee 45 (the "Rost- and Silberlaube") and Fabeck Street 23-25 ("Holzlaube") together are the location of the largest university building complex in Dahlem. The complex houses several humanities and social science subjects, as well as 14 smaller departments from the Department of History and Cultural Studies.

Various institutes and departments are spread over the Dahlem campus. The School of Business and Economics, the Department of Law, and the Otto Suhr Institute for Political Sciences are all situated near the Henry Ford Building and the University Library.

North of Habelschwerdter Allee 45 are the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, the Department of Biology, Chemistry and Pharmacy, and the Department of Physics as well as the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies.

Also included on the Dahlem campus is the 106-acre one-of-a-kind Botanic Garden containing more than 20,000 wild plants.

Lankwitz Campus

Earth Sciences
The Lankwitz campus is home to the Institute of Geological Sciences and the Institute of Geographical Sciences. The Department of Earth Sciences also comprises the Institute of Meteorology and the Institute for Space Sciences, which are located in Steglitz.

University Archives
The University Archives are also located on the Lankwitz campus.

Düppel Campus

Most of the units of the the Department of Veterinary Medicine are located on the Düppel campus, but some are located in Dahlem and Mitte.

Benjamin Franklin Campus

In 2003 the university medicine departments of Freie Universität Berlin and Humboldt Universität merged. Since then, Charité has been run jointly by both universities. It has four locations. The Benjamin Franklin campus is located in southern Berlin in the district of Steglitz.
