Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, is formerly known as the Meteorology College of Nanjing University. It was established in 1960 by the China Meteorological Administration, then had their name changed to Nanjing Institute of Meteorology in May, 1963. Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology is the oldest institution of higher learning of meteorology science in China.
China Meteorological Administration of the Jiangsu province took over the university's administration in February, 2000. Its present name of Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology was adopted in May, 2004 with authorization by Jiangsu Government and the Ministry of Education of PRC.
The university offers Associate, Bachelor, Master and Doctorate degree programs in areas including Atmospheric Science, Information Science and Technology, Environmental Science, Engineering, management, literature, economics, laws and agriculture. Currently, the university has over 30,000 undergraduates and more than 1,100 full-time teachers, including one Academician from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and four experts of the “1000 Talent Plan”. Almost 70% of the full-time teachers have senior professional titles or doctor’s degrees.
The university has a batch of key disciplines in both state and provincial levels and some brand and characteristic majors in China and Jiangsu Province. There are now 50 undergraduate majors covering the 8 main subject categories, namely science, engineering, management, literature, economics, law, agriculture and art. So far, more than 50,000 students have graduated from the university. The degrees granted are widely recognized by many countries such as the US, the UK and Canada.
The university has been actively taking part in key research programs on national meteorological field for a long time and plays an important role in its basic research. Hundreds of scientific and technological rewards both on national and provincial levels have been awarded to the university. In recent years, there is a rapid development in philosophy and social science in the university and several awards on ministerial and provincial level were awarded.
Sticking to the guideline of open development, collaborative innovation and fast promotion and overall improvement, Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology promotes discipline construction, faculty development, talent cultivation, scientific research and international cooperation.
