About Memorial University

As Newfoundland and Labrador's only university, Memorial has a special obligation to the people of this province. Established as a memorial to the Newfoundlanders who lost their lives on active service during the First and Second World Wars, Memorial University draws inspiration from these shattering sacrifices of the past as we help to build a better future for our province, our country and our world.

We are a multi-campus, multi-disciplinary, public, teaching/research university committed to excellence in everything we do. We strive to have national and global impact, while fulfilling our social mandate to provide access to university education for the people of the province and to contribute to the social, cultural, scientific and economic development of Newfoundland and Labrador and beyond.

Memorial has more than 18,500 students spread across four campuses and nearly 85,000 alumni active throughout the world. From local endeavors to research projects of national concern, Memorial's impact is felt far and wide.

Campus information

Memorial University has four campuses, each with its own flavor and charm. The province’s capital city, St. John’s, is home to the St. John’s campus which offers a full range of academic programs in a modern, urban setting. Also located in St. John’s is the Marine Institute, Canada’s leading centre of fisheries and marine training and one of the largest marine educational facilities in the world. Grenfell Campus, located in Corner Brook on the scenic west coast of the island, is a liberal arts and science campus specializing in environmental and fine arts programs.

Memorial’s teaching and learning opportunities extend beyond the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. In the United Kingdom, the Harlow Campus, nestled in the quaint town of Old Harlow, Essex, is a unique vantage point from which to study, research, and explore in the European Union.

Moreover, Memorial University’s 450 distance education courses make it possible to extend your classroom beyond borders, enabling you to undertake academic exploration anywhere in the world.

St. John's campus:

  • The largest campus is located in St. John's. Prince Philip Drive runs east-west through the main campus, with Westerland Road bordering it to the west, Elizabeth Avenue to the south and Allandale Road to the east.
