British High Commissioner Her Excellency Vicki Treadell CMG MVO, hosted a pre-departure briefing and reception for Malaysian scholars heading to the UK for the academic year 2016-2017.
The Chevening Scholarships programme is the UK government's global scholarship programme funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations. There are currently 44,000 Chevening alumni around the world since it began in 1983.
Successful scholars will be heading to pursue wide range of Master's programmes in the top UK universities, with the aim of returning to Malaysia to make a significant contribution in one of these priority areas: foreign policy, human rights and law, media and education, sustainable development economics, Islamic finance, science, and engineering.
This year recorded the highest number of applications received, 701 applicants, as compared to last year's 600.
"The education links between the UK and the Malaysia are long-standing and will remain strong amidst the Brexit concerns," she said. "A British education has always been and will continue to be the top choice for students seeking a world-class education," she added. Currently, there are 16,000 Malaysians studying in the UK now, and another 58,000 individuals studying for UK qualifications in Malaysia through the British universities in the country, as well as existing collaborations with local partner universities.
Speaking to EasyUni, Treadell said that there are other universities that are "very keen" to establish schools in Malaysia, as well as the wider Asian market. "In a way, every British institution coming in to Malaysia is helping the country realise its ambition to become an education destination in Asia," she said.
